LinkedIn has published a new overview of Gen Z, and the key traits and trends that define this increasingly influential cohort.

Gen Z, which includes individuals born between 1997 and 2012, will soon overtake Baby Boomers as the largest consumer cohort, accounting for more than $140 billion in direct spending in the United States alone. Gen Z is also the first generation in the world to be digitally linked from birth, as LinkedIn points out:

“This explains their fondness for social networking sites like Linkedin.” After graduating from high school, Gen Z individuals join LinkedIn, and there are now over 78 million Gen Z professionals worldwide. The majority of Gen Zers (71%) spend more than an hour every day on social media, and 63 percent use LinkedIn more than once per week.”

Given this generation’s size and power, as well as their general digital connectedness, it’s critical for all companies to understand their essential habits and preferences in order to optimize connection and sales.
